The Usage of Auxiliary verbs A Comprehensive Guide

The verbs "can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must and ought" are called 'Modal Auxiliary verbs'. Modal Auxiliary verbs / Modal verbs are used before (Main Verbs) ordinary verbs and express ideas such as permission,possibility, certainty and necessity. 

Special Verbs

Need and dare are also sometimes used like modal verbs.

Auxiliary Be Forms

The auxiliary verbs: Be Forms are used:

1) To make the formation of the continuous tenses.

For Example

I am learning English.

She was writing an exam.

They were playing.

Peter is studying.

2) To make the formation of passive verb forms.

For Example

They were shocked.

The actor was praised.

She was asked.

3. Be forms can be followed by an infinitive. This structure is used to talk about an arrangement, a plan, an agreement or a command.

For Example

I am to see him tomorrow. (Arrangement)

They are to be married next month.

You are to leave at once.

The auxiliary verbs:  Have Forms are used

The auxiliary Verbs have & has the following uses:

1) To make the formation of the perfect and perfect continuous tenses.

For Example

I have completed.

She has attended.

It has been raining.

2) They are used with the infinitive to indicate obligation.

For Example

She has to be here by 9 o’clock.

I have to go there.

3) Had + infinitive structure can be used to talk about an obligation that existed in the past.

They had to be there by 9 o’clock to start the work.

Notes:

In Interrogative and Negative Sentences, "have to and had to" are used with "do, does and did".

For Example

I had to learn it.

Did I have to learn?

She doesn’t have to learn.

They have to learn.

Do they have to learn?

They don’t have to learn.

I had to learn.

Did I have to learn?

I didn’t have to learn.
