Direct and indirect objects Explanation
Some transitive verbs are followed by two objects in a sentence. One is the direct object and the other is the indirect object.

For Example:
My father gave him a gift.
I taught him a lesson.
She bought me a toy.
Note: In the first sentence, "a gift" is the direct object of gave and "him" is the indirect object.
My father gave what? A gift (Direct object)
My father gave …to whom? Him (Indirect object)
Similarly, In second sentence, "a lesson" is the direct object and "him" is the indirect object.

In the third sentence, "a toy" is the direct object, and "me" is the indirect object.
Notes
We can notice in the above sentence, "The indirect object usually refers to a person" and "the direct object usually refers to a thing".
