Types of Sentences - Kinds of Sentences In English Grammar

Types of Sentences

When we speak or write, we generally use words in groups to make sentence. Such a group of words which makes complete sense is called a sentence.

Example:

Gorge sat in a corner.

Sujatha went to market.

I got success.

I like fruits.

Kinds of sentences

There are four kinds of sentences in English Grammar.

1. Assertive or declarative sentence

2. Interrogative sentence

3. Imperative sentences

Assertive or Declarative sentence

A sentence which makes a statement or assertion is called an assertive or declarative

sentence.

Examples:

Kohli is Indian Cricketer.

Milk is White.

The sun sets in the west.

We are friends.

Note: An assertive sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a "full stop".

Interrogative sentence

A sentence which asks a question is called an interrogative sentence.

Examples:

Do you learn English?

Where is your brother?

Have you competed your work?

Note: An interrogative sentence ends with a "question mark" at the end.

Imperative sentences

A sentence that expresses a command, request or entreaty is called an imperative sentence.

Examples:

Do all the sums.

Learn English Grammar.

Don't go that side.

Note: An imperative sentence usually does not have a subject and ends with "full stop".

Exclamatory sentences

A sentence which expresses some strong feelings is called an exclamatory sentence.

Examples:

What a beautiful she is!

How long it is!

How cold the box is!
