Adverb Definition and Types

Adverbs are words like now, then, today, yesterday, here, there, tomorrow very and carefully. 

An adverb is a word that modifies the meaning of a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

Read the following sentences:

Rosy smiled sweetly.

The oranges are very sour.

They spoke very rudely.

In sentence 1, the adverb sweetly shows how (or in what manner) Rosy smiled. It modifies the verb sweetly.

In sentence 2, the adverb very says something about the sourness of the oranges. It

modifies the adjective sour.

In sentence 3, very says something about the manner in which they spoke. It modifies the

adverb rudely.

Note: Sometimes the adverbs standing at the beginning of sentences modify the whole

the sentence, rather than a particular word.

For Example:

Unfortunately, no one attended the meeting. (= It was unfortunate that no one attended the meeting.)

Probably, they were mistaken. (= It is probable that they were mistaken.)

Kinds of adverbs

There are many kinds of adverbs.

1. Adverbs of time

2. Adverbs of frequency

3. Adverbs of place

4. Adverbs of manner

Adverbs of time

Adverbs of time answer the question ‘when’. 

For Example: 

today, yesterday, now, before, daily, already, since, ago, never etc.

I attended the meeting yesterday.

He met me a few minutes ago.

I have never seen him before.

Adverbs of frequency

Adverbs of frequency answer the question ‘how often’. 

For Examples: 

often, always, once, never, again, seldom, frequently etc.

I seldom go to the temple.

I met him again this morning.

I never drink coffee.

Adverbs of place

Adverbs of place answer the question ‘where’. 

For Examples:

here, there, up, down, everywhere, out, in etc.

I jumped down.

Don't go out.

I met him there.

Don't come here.

Adverbs of manner

Adverbs of manner answer the question ‘how’ or ‘in what manner’. 

Note: In this all the adverbs ending in "ly". 

For Examples:

completely, quickly, carefully, generally, commonly, sweetly, occasionally, clearly, bravely, beautifully, well, fast, etc.

The soldiers fought bravely in the war.

You should read this book carefully.

The horse ran fast.
