Use of The Simple Present Tense

Structure: Subject + first form of the verb

For Example:

I write.

He Plays.

She Plays.

You Play.

They Play.

Note: We have to notice here the marker -s in the second and third sentences. When the subject is a third person singular, we have to add the marker -s to the verb in a simple present tense.

1. The simple present tense is used to talk about a habitual action.

For Example:

He wakes up at 9 am.

He drinks coffee in the morning.

2. The simple present tense is used to talk about General Truths.

For Example:

Milk is white.

The sun sets in the west.

3.The simple present tense is used in exclamatory sentences like the sentences beginning with "here" and "there" to express what is actually happening in the present.

For Example:

There goes your Father!

Here comes the train!

4. The simple present tense is used to talk about future events which are fixed.

For Example:

Our PM comes On Monday.

The Game starts at 10 o’clock.

5. The simple present tense is used to introduce quotations.

For Example:

Keats says, ‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever.’

6. The simple present tense is used in clauses of time and condition.

For Example:

I will meet you when he comes here. (NOT I will meet you when he will come.)

I will go to The USA after I get Visa. (NOT I will go to the USA after I will get visa.)

7. The simple present tense is used  in broadcast commentaries instead of the present continuous tense to talk about the activities which are in progress.

For Example:

The ball hits the net and he loses the point.

Finally, the curtain drops and the lights go out.
